THE DADACOMPUTER: 1981 UK Synthpunk
The Dadacomputer was created as an experiment in long-distance collaboration, well Cardiff and Bristol, about 40 miles apart, separated by the Bristol Channel. The recordings were made in the Autumn of 1981. MAP and I had met about 6 months earlier in Bristol due to me putting an ad in a record shop looking to work with similar musicians quoting TG, Kraftwerk, Chrome etc as influences. We did a few recordings together but then I decided to move back to Cardiff where I had come from. I had spent 3 years in Bristol struggling to do a philosophy degree all the while getting into improvised and electronic music and collaborating with various Bristol musicians. So when I went back we wrote a lot to each other, both releasing solo music on our own cassette labels MAPtapes and Quick Stab Music Products. Then we got going on The Dadacomputer. I created the initial backings using a Korg MS20, various Akai reel to reel machines, which I did half speed and double speed manipulation with, I also used a Dr. Rhythm drum machine and various vinyl ie: Stingray (a children's marionette television show, created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson from 1964–65). Once these original backings (which to my knowledge no longer exist) were completed I posted them to MAP and he then added all the overdubs using a double cassette machine. Guitar, vocals, keyboards (Casiotone and Stylophone) and sawing wood on one track. Once this was done we both released the finished recording on our respective cassette labels. The Dadacomputer title came from me saying in a letter "What shall we call it, something crazy like dadacomputer maybe", and MAP saying "YES that will do great".

Shane Fahey "Twin Korg - Water Drip Code".
"Recorded 1996-7, Fahey mans two Korg MS-20 synths triggered by a dripping tap and contact mics secured to the sink, for a double-barrelled analogue attack that ranges from industrial to noise to organic sound pieces". Clinton Green 2012.
Liner notes from "Twin Korg":
Physical acoustic phenomena tracked into Control Voltage.
Analogue oscillators & filter frequency cutoffs triggered & guided by the cluster of events from a water tap dripping into a laundry sink.
Variable valve settings on faucet range from single, isolated drips; clusters; turbulence & streams.
Tactile & percussive properties of the pieces are achieved via contact mics secured to the to the inside walls & bottom of a laundry sink. This sink also acts as a resonator & reverberation plate.
No water sound or vibration is audible in the recording!
The other aspect of these behavioural pieces is its twin/binaural nature. One of the main ideas of this recording was to use a matched pair of analogue synthesisers with the focus on trying to make their signal outputs identical. The analogue settings on the synths were not calibrated to each other and because the synth threseholds & modulators were being manipulated by hand the degree of accuracy between the two was poor. This created interesting cross-correlations in the resulting stereo field. A stereo enhancement system was the only outboard insert in the audio chain. Sometimes the two synths seem to come together as a stereo sound field and at other times are identifiable as two distinct mono streams.

Undecisive God/Ernie Althoff - Dual Album Launch
:: Undecisive God
:: Sean Baxter
:: Ernie Althoff
:: Em Vécue Aquieu
:: Conduit Arts Initiative
:: Doors open: 8pm
:: Entry: $5.00
Undecisive God (Clinton Green) has been a mainstay of Australian experimental music since the 1990s. Focused for many years upon new approaches to the electric guitar as a sound generation tool, Green’s current interest is in prepared turntables as dynamic generators of random sound and percussive patterns. He has released numerous recordings and has performed live around Australia, including in festivals such as Liquid Architecture, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Melbourne Fringe Festival and Electrofringe.
Sean Baxter is an Australian improviser who has forged an international reputation as a bold explorer of percussive possibilities both as a soloist and through his work with the acclaimed avant garde trio, Pateras/Baxter/Brown. Focusing on the use of extended techniques applied to the conventional drumkit, he utilises an arsenal of metallic junk and other percussive detritus to expand the sonic palette of the percussion tradition.
Ernie Althoff, Australian musician, composer, instrument builder, and visual artist. He was involved in the Clifton Hill Community Music Centre during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Althoff is unique not only for the original textures and sonic elements he creates, often tempered with wry humour, but also for his practically continuous contribution to and participation in the Melbourne experimental music community for over three decades.
Em Vécue Aquieu (Sam Filmer) is a newcomer to the Melbourne experimental community. He creates an ambient, spiritual sound that builds an articulate spacial environment exploring experimentalism in classical structures. A persistent, lulling effect is translated, completely submersing everything in close proximity. Experiencing his live shows audiences become transfixed on the beauty and simplicity of his sounds.

Featuring:
Grey Skies Blue is an experimental documentary about protest, power and the possibility of change. Utilising interviews and imagery from the S11/Melbourne World Economic Forum demonstrations of 2000, Grey Skies Blue documents the experiences of a community gathered at a political demonstration. Featuring an original soundtrack performed live by Seth Rees (Amplifier Machine, The Spheres) and Guy Harris (The Spheres, Winternationale) the three screen documentary is an evocative encapsulation of a shared emotional experience - the crystallisation of a time, place and community of people who believed if but for a fleeting moment that “another world is possible”.
Em Vécue Aquieu is the solo project from guitarist Sam Filmer. Creating ambient, spiritual sound, Sam builds an articulate spacial environment. Experiencing his rare live shows, his sounds rise up with texture to gently fill the negative space between a nearby coffee grinder and a murmur from the back row. Chordal sound design together with heavily effected guitar, Em Vécue Aquieu explores experimentalism in classical structures without lending too often to silence. A persistent, lulling effect is translated, completely submersing everything in close proximity.
This show also marks the official launch for his debut cassette release "Lightlike".
Ollie Olsen has amassed an incredible body of work in a variety of forms and projects: a chameleon-like artist delving into early punk/post-punk, industrial, with The Young Charlatans, Whirlywirld and NO, through to his electronic music, sound design, compositions for film and television and too many others to name.
Seaworthy, are a three piece collective that revolves around core member Cameron Webb as well as Sam Shinazzi and Greg Bird, exploring melodic and experimental approaches to the construction (and unravelling) of minimalist sound scapes from looped guitar, warm drones, piano, electronics and field recordings. The compositions often blur the lines of conventional categorisation with elements traditionally considered part of “indie” or “post” rock blended with processed musical and field recordings. Instruments and samples are looped through amps and effects pedals, giving the sound an organic feel concentrating on subtle shifts in melody, tone and texture to convey a sense of time and place.
Zac Keiller seeks to discover new and unique sonic textures from one of the most overused and unimaginatively approached instruments in Western music: The guitar. The majority of his previous releases saw him working with ambient textures or electroacoustic improvisation. Whilst more recent efforts have seen him limiting the use of pedals, attempting to find a kind of transcendence through stark purity of tone, using the entire guitar, attempting to make it breathe with no smoothing out of the rough edges or slick over processing. The compositions vary and grow to tell stories and create mood, with an atmosphere in parts epic wall of sound, while at others minimal and sublime.
Monolith kick off the evening with their own brand of industrial space drone. Monolith conjur a unique atmosphere that is at both times, expansive yet contained. Taking inspiration from John Carpenter, Minit, Grey Wolves, Tangerine Dream, and Eliane Radigue to name a few, yet still managing to exist in a terrain of their own.
